The CHSAA softball playoffs get underway this week, starting Saturday with the Archdiocesan quarterfinals. Brooklyn/Queens gets going Monday.
There are a few interesting first-round matchups in both. St. Joseph Hill, fresh off its 4-0 win over Notre Dame Academy, gets a rematch with Preston. The Panthers beat them 4-0 behind a five-hitter from graduated ace Devyn Abbate last season. Over in Brooklyn/Queens, Mary Louis and St. Edmund square off. TMLA, which is playing well of late, beat the Eagles in both teams’ season opener. Since then St. Edmund had a seven-game winning streak and won the Brooklyn division crown. Christ the King ace Olivia Auman threw a two-hit shutout against Fontbonne Hall during the regular season.
New this season is a true city championship game prior to the state playoffs. The Archdiocesan winner and Brooklyn/Queens champ will play at Floyd Bennett Field on May 24. The two could again meet up in the CHSAA state final on June 1. Can St. Joseph by Sea repeat as city champ and claim the elusive state title?
