CHSFL rankings: Week 7
The penultimate weekend in the CHSFL regular season saw a pair of wild games with last-minute victories as No. 2 Holy Cross lost a heartbreaker to St. Anthony’s and No. 4 Fordham Prep outlasted No. 7 Mount St. Michael in a barnburner.
Elsewhere, St. Joseph by the Sea remained perfect after falling behind early against Iona Prep, No. 6 Cardinal Hayes is undefeated no more after a stunning loss to Archbishop Stepinac and No. 8 Xavier has won three in a row.
Here’s a look at this week’s rankings:
1. St. Joseph by the Sea (6-0) (Last week: 1)
At the start of the year, the Sea rushing game was a two-headed monster featuring Andrew Armato and Lyle McCombs. And while the two seniors still share the bulk of the carries, McCombs has established himself as one of the premier backs in the city. On Saturday he rushed for three touchdowns and 210 yards. Oh yeah, and he had an 85-yard kickoff return for a TD, too.
Next: No. 2 Holy Cross (Oct. 31, 1:30 p.m.)
2. Holy Cross (5-2) (2)
One first down. That’s how close Holy Cross was to one of the biggest regular season wins in the past decade. Instead the Knights were stopped and St. Anthony’s came away with a wild 30-28 victory Sunday at Bayside Athletic Field. Devon Cajuste took his game to another level, Barrington Wallace is running like he did as a sophomore and Nelson Perez came up with two huge sacks. Despite the heartbreaking loss, the Knights are just fine as they head into the final weekend of the regular season.

3. Xaverian (4-3) (3)
The Clippers survived heavy rains and winds and took care of business with a 17-0 win over Kellenberg on Long Island. Big plays from wide receiver Mario Tull and running back Zack Kearney helped Xaverian survive three Greg Rando interceptions. Coach Joe DeSiena told his team they have a chance for the biggest regular season win in program history when St. Anthony’s visits Kings Bay Friday. Their propensity for mistakes can’t rear its head for that to happen.
Next: St. Anthony’s (Oct. 30, 7:30 p.m.)
4. Fordham Prep (4-3) (4)
The Rams are rolling. For the second straight week, Fordham Prep pulled out a squeaker late, this time with a touchdown pass from Max Kinder to Michael Seminario with 30 seconds left for a come-from-behind 41-40 win over Mount St. Michael. Both Kinder and Seminario had career days, hooking up three times for scores and the Rams have now won three straight.
Next: @ Holy Trinity (Oct. 31, 1:30 p.m.)
5. Monsignor Farrell (3-4) (5)
Wondering how important Michael Viegas is to the Monsignor Farrell offense? Without the banged up sophomore running back, the Lions only managed seven points for a third straight loss in a 10-7 defeat to Chaminade Saturday. The Farrell defense has been stout, but the offense is just plain anemic.
Next: @ Iona Prep (Oct. 31, 1:30 p.m.)
6. Cardinal Hayes (5-1) (6)
The Cardinals hit their first bump in the road Friday night and it was a big one. They committed seven turnovers, including three Kwamayne Davis interceptions, and were blitzed by unbeaten Archbishop Stepinac, 44-19. Coach CJ O’Neil wants to see how his team responds to its first defeat and will get a chance to do so against a quality St. Peter’s squad under the lights Friday night.
Next: St. Peter’s (Oct. 30, 7 p.m.)
7. Mount St. Michael (1-5) (7)
The biggest win of the season was a big stop or a first down way for Mount St. Michael, except it got neither and suffered a crushing one-point loss to Fordham Prep. The positives were on the offensive side of the ball. The Mountaineers scored 40 points, watched fullback Gary Acquah move piles of Rams defenders and rush for more than 100 yards and quarterback Jaylen Amaker had a good day in the air.
Next: Chaminade (Oct. 30, 1:30 p.m.)
8. Xavier (4-3) (8)
The Knights made short work of lowly Cardinal Spellman Saturday and after a slow start Xavier is red-hot. Chris Stevens’ men have won three straight, four of their last five and gained 501 yards on the ground against the Pilots. Their offense is confusing and the ground attack is varied. Look out for the Knights come the post-season.
Next: Christ the King (Nov. 1, 1:30 p.m.)
9. St. Peter’s (3-3) (10)
The Eagles had won two straight following a two-game losing streak. Fullback Dan Fischetti rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown and Gabe Ogbu had a 47-yard TD run in a comfortable win over Bishop Ford. St. Peter’s can make a statement about its chances in the playoff if it can go toe to toe with Cardinal Hayes Friday night. It won’t be easy on the road with the Cardinals coming off a loss.
Next: @ No. Cardinal Hayes (Oct. 30, 7 p.m.)
No. 10 St. Francis Prep (0-7) (9)
The Terriers season-long losing streak continued Friday night in a 40-6 loss to undefeated Holy Trinity. Despite the lopsided result, St. Francis Prep was in the game in the third quarter. There’s no quit in this squad, led by the versatile Bryan Caffrey, one of the most underrated wide receivers in the city. With one-win Kellenberg on the horizon, perhaps the Prep gets off the schneid in its regular season finale.
Next: Kellenberg (Oct. 30, 5 p.m.)
New: None
Dropped out: None
On the bubble: Christ the King (1-6)
