COMMODORES STUN SOUTH SHORE
H.S. ROUNDUP
Junior quarterback Luis Toro ran for a touchdown and threw for another to help No. 12 Bayside upset fifth-seeded South Shore, 15-0, in the first round of the PSAL playoffs yesterday.
“He played a great game and obviously so did our defense,” said coach Joe Capuana, whose team advanced to the quarterfinals, where the Commodores face top-seeded Lehman next Saturday after the Lions routed No. 16 Boys & Girls, 48-12. “This is a confident team now.”
Bayside didn’t look all that dangerous going into the playoffs. The only team from notoriously weak Queens to make the postseason, the Commodores finished the regular season 4-4 and were up against a South Shore team that featured standout senior Parker Cantey and reached the title game a year ago.
“We don’t have a lot of the names people know,” Capuana said. “But we have a lot of experience here and we knew we could play with them.”

Canarsie’s Shane Deshong ran for four touchdowns, including one for 81 yards, to lead the ninth-seeded Chiefs to a 25-22 win over No. 8 Lincoln. Canarsie was able to hold off a late Railsplitters drive to escape with the victory.
Up next for Canarsie is No. 2 Port Richmond, a 33-10 winner over No. 15 Columbus. Third-seeded Fort Hamilton knocked off No. 14 Midwood, 34-0 and advanced to play JFK, which ended Sheepshead Bay’s hopes of defending its title. The seventh-seeded Knights beat Sheepshead, 32-22.
Tottenville, seeded fourth, pulled away from No. 13 New Dorp with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to win 30-16. Next up for the Pirates is No. 6 Wagner, which beat No. 11 Clinton, 44-24.
Poly Prep ended its season by beating Space Coast (Cape Canaveral), 21-7, in Orlando, Fla. The Blue Devils (5-3) were led by Vincent DeForte, who passed for 212 yards and ran for 83, and Tyrone Grant’s 143 yards on the ground.
