The Cosmos signed young striker Haji Wright, arguably one of the most prolific exciting prospects on the U.S. Under-17 National Team.
“I’m excited about joining the Cosmos. The team plays with an attacking mindset that fits my style and I think it’s the perfect environment for the next stage of my development,’’ Wright said in a release, adding that learning from Spanish veterans Raúl and Marcos Senna played a role in his decision.
“Getting the chance to train with and learn from world-class players such as Raúl and Marcos Senna is any player’s dream.”
The signing was first reported by the New York Times.
The 17-year-old Wright is a Los Angeles native who has starred for the U.S. youth teams since being called into the U-14 squad in 2012. Last year, he poured in 18 goals and seven assists in 22 games for the U.S. U-17 squad, including leading the team to qualification at the 2015 CONCACAF U-17 championships for this summer’s upcoming U-17 World Cup in Chile.
“Haji’s a very exciting prospect,” Cosmos coach Giovanni Savarese said. “He has some special attacking qualities, and can play as a striker or on the wing, and gives us some more options in the final third.”
The Cosmos open the NASL season Saturday at the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
