The Brooklyn Cyclones travel softball team earned a berth into the Pony Nationals last weekend by winning the Queens/Nassau Comets 18U Summer Classic in Valley Stream, L.I.
In the championship game, the Cyclones beat the host Comets, 5-2, led by slick defense and James Madison’s Caitlyn Ganley, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. They turned a pair of double plays – including one in the second inning with the bases loaded – to end Comets threats. Madison’s Marie Oneto, who was brilliant all weekend, earned the victory.
Cardozo’s Sandy Tomasik went 1-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and hit more than .500 for the tournament, along with Ganley and St. Edmund Prep’s Emma Ferington. The pitching trio of Oneto, Ferington and Bishop Ford’s Ashley Peterson gave up just one earned run in a 4-0-1 weekend.
Madison’s Patrice Mistretta was the prototypical leadoff hitter all tournament, earning eight walks and getting three hits. Franklin K. Lane graduate Samantha Soto was excellent in four games behind the plate and drove in key runs throughout. The outfield defense of Mistretta, Midwood’s Geena Bell and St. Edmund Prep’s Meagan Cranston was strong.
