Liverpool played out a pulsating 2-2 draw against local rival Everton Sunday while ten-man Manchester United held Tottenham to a scoreless draw to remain unbeaten in the English Premier League.
Kenny Dalglish was forced to settle for point as he took charge of his first home game since his high-profile reappointment as boss of the Merseyside giant.
Raul Meireles crashed home the opener for Liverpool just before the half-hour mark but to the dismay of Dalglish and the expectant Anfield crowd the game was turned on its head after the break.
Everton’s Sylvain Distin nodded in to level the score on 46 minutes and Jermaine Beckford slotted home six minutes later to give the Toffees a 2-1 lead.
But it was not to be a comeback victory for Everton as a penalty from Dirk Kuyt on 68 minutes ensured the Merseyside spoils were shared.
Manchester United was forced to dig deep after going down a man when 21-year-old Brazilian Rafael received his second booking 17 minutes from time.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men extended their unbeaten streak however as Tottenham was unable to break down the Red Devils’ backline in an encounter that was captivating throughout but never really exploded into life.
Elsewhere in the EPL, Aston Villa climbed out of the relegation zone after securing a second-half leveler against local rival Birmingham City at St. Andrews.
Birmingham’s Roger Johnson drew first blood for the host, scoring four minutes into the second half. But James Collins secured Villa’s share of the spoils with a right-footed shot on 73 minutes to lift the team into 17th in the league table.
Ghana star Asamoah Gyan netted an injury-time equalizer to rescue a point for Sunderland in a 1-1 draw against Newcastle in the Wear-Tyne derby at the Stadium of Light.
