Todd Pletcher’s Go Deputy was 4-5 favorite as 117-pound highweight in field of five for Grade 2, $150,000 Bowling Green at mile-and-three eighths over inner turf, despite bridesmaid’s reputation after finishing second three times, third once, in last four starts, all graded stakes on grass. With Fernando Jara riding for first time, 6-year-old son of Deputy Minister, making first start since narrow loss in April 28 Elkhorn at Keeneland, sat off pace set by Gigli, rallied wide around far turn, took lead from Gigli midstretch, then dug in to hold safe late charge of Crown Point to win by half-length.

With most of New York’s top jocks (Prado, Velazquez, Gomez, etc.) riding out of town yesterday in stakes engagements at various tracks (Calder, Delaware, Colonial, etc.), it figured to be big afternoon at Belmont for two who stayed, Jara and Eibar Coa. Jara delivered big time, booting home four winners; Coa won a pair but also rode three beaten favorites.

SECOND RACE – After rallying from far off pace to win opener aboard August Song ($24), Jara completed $118 early double on 210G yearling Marcavelly, 2-year-old first-time starter from Bill Mott barn. Bet down to 2-1 going six furlongs on turf, son of champion Johannesberg tracked pace, bid for lead outside around turn, took command top of stretch, drew off as much best.

THIRD RACEAtfirst Blush, 4-5 under Coa coming off 21/2-length score in similar 14G handicap, sat off speed duel between Mike’s Greenfields and Just Ducky Too, cruised to lead in hand around turn, opened up mid-stretch, then was all-out final furlong to turn back bids from Cat’s a Rockin and Sir Tyler T, who was in tight quarters late. Caiman came with big late run under Jara to be fourth.

SIXTH RACE – In $65,000 overnight Irish Actress Stakes on turf for New York-bred fillies and mares, On the Bus, 6-year-old mare racing in foal for Dale Romans, was winless in six starts since taking Yaddo last summer at Saratoga;11th last out in Mount Vernon over this course in June, off at 14-1 with Herbie Castillo up, she pressed pace set by Samsincharge, went to front mid-stretch, wasn’t threatened to wire. Half Heaven was along for second; Finlandia, 3-2 choice under Coa, came with too little, too late, to finish head back in third.
