SARATOGA SPRINGS — Trainer Bob Baffert’s 3-year-old colt Bodemeister, unraced since finishing second in the Preakness, has been retired to stud at WinStar Farm in Kentucky.
According to a release, the son of Empire Maker suffered an injury to his left shoulder that would not heal in time to make this year’s Breeders’ Cup, so his owner, Ahmed Zayat, and WinStar Farm decided to retire him.
Bodemeister raced six times, winning twice, including a 9 1/2-length score in the Arkansas Derby. He finished second in his other four starts, setting the pace in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, only to be run down in the closing yards by I’ll Have Another.
