Jockey Vladimir Diaz, who was thrown hard to the ground and run over by Thunder Search after his mount, Hugh Eff Oh, broke down in the ninth race at Belmont Thursday, underwent surgery at North Shore Hospital Thursday night.

”He fractured his right hip, his collarbone and he also broke seven ribs,” said Maria Ortiz, a relative of Diaz. ”The doctors were very happy with the way the surgery went. They said that the hip and collarbone should heal fine and the ribs will heal themselves.

”Right now he’s alert and awake. He’s talking but he’s in some pain.”

It was not known how long the injury would keep Diaz out of action. Hugh Eff Oh was euthanized on the track.
