Donovan scores for Everton
Maybe the fourth time is the charm. After three failed stints in the Bundesliga, Landon Donovan scored his first European club goal today. He tallied for Everton in a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Sunderland.
He ran onto a headed pass from striker Tim Cahill, chested the ball down and slotted the ball home calmly with his left foot. Here are video highlights of the game.
“The games he’s started have been Arsenal and Man City, who’re two of the better teams in the country really, and I thought he played really well in those games,” Everton coach David Moyes said on EvertonTV. “He’s got a great goal-scoring record in America if you look at it. He’s got a great record for his national team. He hadn’t really had chances in those games, but tonight he got the first one and was a bit unlucky not to get a second one. So if he can add us a goal or two, that’d be great.”
And to make matters sweeter, keeper Tim Howard made a bunch of clutch saves late in the game to preserve the win and his fifth clean sheet of the season. With the two best and most important members of the U.S. National Team both playing at Everton, do the Toffees need a nickname, like Fulham had Fulhamerica? Can you think of a catchy one? Everyank?
