A disqualification in yesterday’s sixth race at the Big A cost one very unlucky racing fan a $5,000 payoff – without her even placing a bet.

Griffinite, the heavy favorite in the sixth, would have paid less than $5 if he won. He did finish first but then was DQ’d, costing Barbara Wolfson of Florida the $5G first price in the “Aqueduct showdown” contest.

The contest, conducted over the Internet, called for fans to pick one horse to finish in the top three on each of the 25 racing days of the fall meet. Wolfson, alive going into yesterday’s final card, picked Griffinite. But he bore out badly following the break, bothering several horses, and the stewards flashed the “inquiry” sign soon after he crossed the wire. His number was taken down and placed . . . fourth.

John Velazquez ran away with the riding title at the meet with 38 winners, followed by Edgar Prado (25), Rich Migliore (17), apprentice Lorenzo Lezcano (16) and Jose Santos (15).
