DRAFT RECAP
RAIDERS: JaMARCUS RUSSELL, QB, LSU: Pride and Poise – Russell has it. Commitment to Excellence: Russell has it. Just Win, Baby: Russell’s four worst games came against best competition.
LIONS: CALVIN JOHNSON, WR, GA. TECH: Do the Lions, who have now drafted a WR with four of their last five first-round picks, try to swing a deal with Tampa Bay. Crowd reaction? “Fire Millen!”
BROWNS: JOE THOMAS, OT, WISCONSIN: Needed a QB, and Ohio native Brady Quinn was available. Crowd reaction? “Cleveland [Blanks]!” Until … pick No. 22.
BUCS: GAINES ADAMS, DE, CLEMSON: Jon Gruden loves Adams’ versatility and needs a pass rusher.
CARDINALS: LEVI BROWN, OT, PENN STATE: Think about what D’Brickashaw Ferguson did for the Jets.
REDSKINS: LaRON LANDRY, S, LSU: The best free safety in college football the past two seasons.
VIKINGS: ADRIAN PETERSON, RB, OKLAHOMA: Played 14 games the past two seasons but has all the physical tools to emerge as one of the NFL’s all-time great backs.
FALCONS: JAMAAL ANDERSON, DE, ARKANSAS: Maybe more upside than Adams, or maybe a reach.
DOLPHINS: TED GINN JR., WR, OHIO STATE: Daunte Culpepper’s knee may never be the same, and Quinn was available – so the Fish take a receiver/return specialist.
TEXANS: AMOBI OKOYE, DT, LOUISVILLE: The 19-year-old joins not-so-super Mario Williams.
49ERS: PATRICK WILLIS, LB, MISSISSIPPI: Looking for an early favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year? This kid has a heart and brings a hammer.
BILLS: MARSHAWN LYNCH, RB, CALIFORNIA: They’ve unloaded Travis Henry and Willis McGahee in the past few seasons. Lynch, who can run and catch, might be the answer.
RAMS: ADAM CARRIKER, DE, NEBRASKA: A classic Nebraska end with a great motor; more athletic than former Huskers’ star Grant Wistrom.
JETS (from Panthers): DARRELLE REVIS, CB, PITTSBURGH: More upside than Leon Hall, whom Jets fans began chanting for when the trade was announced. Revis is bigger and almost as fast.
STEELERS: LAWRENCE TIMMONS, OLB, FLORIDA STATE: Bill Cowher is gone but defense remains the name of the game in the Steel City. ‘Noles have a legacy of great linebackers.
PACKERS: JUSTIN HARRELL, DT, TENNESSEE: A a classic run-stuffer who needs to be pushed.
BRONCOS (from Jaguars): JARVIS MOSS, DE, FLORIDA: Mike Shanahan continues to bolster his defense; unlike Harrell, Moss knows only one gear: overdrive.
BENGALS: LEON HALL, CB, MICHIGAN: Ultimate character guy, Hall can run but also can get beat.
TITANS: MICHAEL GRIFFIN, S, TEXAS: Goodbye Pacman Jones. Griffin can play some corner.
GIANTS: AARON ROSS, CB, TEXAS: The Jim Thorpe Award winner as the nation’s top corner. Texas has been putting out some serious DBs in recent years.
JAGUARS (from Broncos) : REGGIE NELSON, S, FLORIDA: Covers a lot of ground but has a lot to learn.
BROWNS (from Cowboys): BRADY QUINN, QB, NOTRE DAME: Cleveland paid a hefty price to get their QB of the future, a No. 2 this year and next year’s No. 1.
CHIEFS: DWAYNE BOWE, WR, LSU: A big, fast target; we like Tennessee’s Robert Meachem more.
PATRIOTS: BRANDON MERIWEATHER, S, MIAMI (Fla.): Rodney Harrison can’t last forever. Meriweather, if he doesn’t kick anyone (see FIU brawl), is the next great former ‘Canes DB.
PANTHERS (from Jets): JON BEASON, LB, MIAMI (Fla.): Carolina could replace one former Hurricanes LB, Dan Morgan (multiple concussions), with a younger, healthier one.
COWBOYS (from Eagles): ANTHONY SPENCER, DE, PURDUE: Opposite DeMarcus Ware . Watch out Eli.
SAINTS: ROBERT MEACHEM, WR, TENNESSEE: You’re welcome, Drew Brees: Former Hofstra WR Marques Colston on one side, Meachem on the other.
49ERS (from Patriots): JOE STALEY, OT, CENTRAL MICHIGAN: Will help QB Alex smith succeed.
RAVENS: BEN GRUBBS, G, AUBURN: Classic SEC road grader and Jonathan Ogden might call it a career after this season. Pick fills one hole now.
CHARGERS: CRAIG DAVIS, WR, LSU: The fourth Tiger taken in the first round. Thanks Nick Saban.
BEARS: GREG OLSEN, TE, MIAMI (Fla.): QB’s best friend: a mobile target in the middle of the field.
COLTS: ANTHONY GONZALEZ, WR, OHIO STATE: The epitome of a possession receiver.
