DRUGS COULD AFFECT RELAYS
SACRAMENTO – The men’s and women’s Olympic track coaches didn’t come right out and say it, probably because they’d be hit with an Olympic-sized lawsuit, but George Williams and Sue Humphrey strongly indicated that any athlete under suspicion of using performance-enhancing drugs will not be chosen for the relay teams.
“I promise, we will not leave any medals over there and we will not give any back,” said Williams.
The top three finishes in the 100- and 400-meter dashes plus another three runners comprise the relay pool.
In addition, Williams found himself in an uncomfortable situation yesterday when he was asked if he was embarrassed that Michelle Collins, one of the athletes he coaches, has been informed by the United States Anti-Doping Agency that she faces a lifetime ban for using designer steroids.
“Of course it does [embarrass me],” said Williams. “I just hate it happened to her, if anything happened. It’s all alleged.”
