DETROIT — Rookie defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh is Detroit’s emergency kicker.
Suh attempted an extra point – missing it off the right upright – in the third quarter against the Jets on Sunday after longtime starter Jason Hanson was injured moments earlier.
Hanson hurt his right knee when the Jets’ Trevor Pryce stumbled into him on a short field goal attempt. The Jets were penalized on the play, giving Detroit a new set of downs, and the Lions scored on a 1-yard run by Matthew Stafford.
The 307-pound Suh, who grew up playing soccer, came on to try the extra point, but with the crowd shouting his last name, he kicked it off the upright, leaving the Lions with a 13-10 lead.
Punter Nick Harris handled the ensuing kickoff for Detroit.
