CROMWELL, Conn. – At least Suzy Whaley beat David Duval, whose troubled play continued in the first round of the Greater Hartford Open.

Duval shot a 13-over-par 83 yesterday, leaving him 20 strokes off the lead.

His problems began on the 434-yard par-4 first hole, where he hit two shots out of bounds, one to the left and one to the right. It took him two more shots to the get to the green and two putts to hole out for a quadruple-bogey eight.

After shooting 41 on the front, Duval took a nine on the 411-yard par-4 12th hole. He again pushed two drives out of bounds, then dribbled his third shot only 100 yards off the tee. From there it took him two shots to reach the green and two more putts to get into the hole.

Fittingly, he finished his round with bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes.

Duval declined to be interviewed after the round.
