Jockey Stewart Elliott made a successful visit to Aqueduct as he swept both stakes on the Election Day card. Elliott, who came to prominence as the regular jockey of 2004 Kentucky Derby/Preakness winner Smarty Jones, picked up the mount for the injured Richard Migliore on the Todd Pletcher-trained Summer Raven in the Grade 3 Tempted Stakes.
Elliott sent Summer Raven to the front and held off a challenge from favored Salute to win the Tempted. K.D.’s Shady Lady was second, two lengths behind Summer Raven. Salute was another 2 ½ lengths back in third. Elliott then came back to win the Grade 3 Nashua aboard the John Servistrained Rockport Harbor.
Being hailed by some as Smarty Jones 2, Rockport Harbor took over the lead soon after the start and drew off to win by 61/4 lengths. Defer was second, with Better Than Bonds a head back in third. Sent off the 4-5 favorite, Rockport Harbor ran the mile in 1:36.67.
After his experience with Smarty Jones this year, Servis knew expectations and pressure would be high with Rockport Harbor.
“One thing that was concerning me was all the hype this horse was getting because of Smarty,” Servis said. “He had a lot riding on him today. He is a young horse and if he would have gotten beat today, it wouldn’t have been the worst thing in the world.
“He probably won’t run till next year,” Servis said. “Outside the Remsen, there is nothing to point for. I think we will be heading south a bit earlier next year. Things will depend on how quickly he acclimates, but the Southwest [Stakes at Oaklawn Park] is probably what we are pointing for.”
