MANCHESTER, England — The cost of Manchester City’s rise to the top of the English Premier League was laid bare Friday, with the soccer club announcing the largest financial losses in league history.
The vast investment by owner Sheikh Mansour saw City record losses of $307.6 billion (£194.9 million) for the 2010-11 financial year.
The figure surpassed the £141-million hit Roman Abramovich took in 2005 to help Chelsea dominate English soccer.
Mansour’s spending spree saw the club sign a host of international stars, including David Silva, Mario Balotelli and Yaya Toure, for a combined fee of £156.5 million.
But the outlay escapes the financial crackdown by UEFA, whose Financial Fair Play regulations take effect in the current 2011-12 financial year to prevent the bankrolling of soccer clubs.
Chief operating officer Graham Wallace told City’s official website, “Our losses, which we predicted as part of our accelerated investment strategy, will not be repeated on this scale in the future.”
