Patrick Ewing’s search for a head-coaching job is proving as elusive as his attempts to win an NBA Championship.
The former Knicks center and current Magic assistant coach told the Orlando Sentinel that it doesn’t look like he will be able to land a head-coaching position this offseason.
“Nothing so far,” Ewing told the paper.
“I know the Sacramento job is open after they fired their coach [interim coach Kenny Natt]. I don’t know. Seems like in most of those jobs that they are bringing back the coaches they had.”
The Wizards fired their interim coach Ed Tapscott, but have already hired Flip Saunders as his replacement starting next year. Ewing had told the Sentinel last summer that he might “ride off into the sunset” if he didn’t land a head-coaching job this offseason, but it appears he will return to the team as an assistant next season.
“I’d want to come back, sure. I like it here. The organization has been good to me,” said Ewing, whose team is up 3-2 in their first-round series against the 76ers.
Ewing was frustrated last season that he did not get an interview with the Knicks for their head-coaching position that was filled by Mike D’Antoni. Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy ripped the Knicks when the teams played earlier this season on a night when Ewing was honored by the franchise.
“Why won’t they even give him an interview?” Van Gundy questioned. “But…they’ll want him to help him sell out the building,” and adding that “the organization sort of pretends to appreciate him.”
