Former England soccer star Paul Gascoigne was set to face his second drunk-driving charge this year, police said today.
Gascoigne was pulled over Friday in the Jesmond area of Newcastle, northeastern England, before failing a Breathalyzer test. The troubled 43-year-old was then set to appear at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on Oct. 20.
“A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in the Jesmond area at around 2:45pm [local time] on Friday, Oct. 8. He was charged with driving with excess alcohol and bailed to appear before Newcastle Magistrates on Oct. 20,” a Northumbria Police spokesman said.
It was the latest in a series of alcohol-related issues for the former Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, Rangers, Middlesbrough and Everton player, who has suffered from alcoholism for years. He also faces a separate drunk-driving charge dating back to February, due to be heard next month.
Last week, Gascoigne was lined up to become boss of soccer club Garforth Town, in the Evo-Stik First Division North League, but he pulled out of the deal.
