Unable to land an NFL coaching job for next season, Jim Fassel will explore becoming a TV analyst. “We plan to meet next week about any and all opportunities, and television will definitely be one of them,” Steve Rosner, the fired Giant coach’s agent, told NYP TV Sports.

During his Giant career, Fassel was cordial with the media, but his words were seldom exciting.

Fassel’s desire to return to the sidelines will hurt his broadcasting chances, as networks are shying away from being temp agencies for coaches.

For example, Ross Greenburg, president of HBO Sports, expects Dan Marino’s replacement on Inside the NFL to be around for a while.

“We won’t fall into the trap of getting into the interim coach world, because that just makes no sense,” Greenburg said.

Greenburg wouldn’t reveal his short list for Marino’s replacement.

“I would rather pull a Daniel Snyder on all of you guys,” said Greenburg, referring to the Joe Gibbs hire.

Rosner said he imagines HBO will contact him about two of his clients, Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason. HBO has inquired about Simms in the past. …

A big name to possibly watch as Marino’s replacement on CBS’ NFL Today is John Elway.

If Shannon Sharpe retires as a player, he will be a candidate. The best man for the job gig be HBO’s Cris Carter. While not as big a name as Elway, Carter is a more even-keeled type who could fit well between Deion Sanders and Esiason.

Fox Sports football analyst Tim Green is unlikely to try and unseat New York senator Charles Schumer next year. There have been several reports saying he might.

“It is flattering to be talked about in those terms,” Green said. “I don’t see that job as the most desirable job. To me, that job sort of seems like head coach of the Oakland Raiders.”

Still, the 40-year-old Green, a Republican, would like to enter politics one day. Besides being an attorney, Green just finished his 11th novel, titled ] The First 48.

Fox Sports’ Jimmy Johnson and Marino didn’t have a good relationship as a coach-quarterback tandem in Miami. Johnson’s reaction to Marino being named head of the Dolphins’ football operations was lukewarm at best.

He said the fans in Miami were excited. But then Johnson cited the inexperienced Matt Millen in Detroit, saying there is a learning curve.

In other words, Johnson wouldn’t have hired Marino in a million years.

Fox Sports’ Troy Aikman said he would be interested in a similar position as Marino’s new job.

Last Sunday, Fox Sports’ Cris Collinsworth properly criticized Brett Favre for his woeful OT interception that ended up leading to the Packers losing. Collinsworth showed guts because Favre was the feel-good story, following his father’s death.
