Sixth-seeded Australian Patrick Rafter struggled early, but beat Belgian Christope Rochus 7-5, 6-2, 6-1 last night at Arthur Ashe Stadium. After trailing the first set 5-2, Rafter won five straight games to steal it, then dominated the next two sets.

On Saturday, Rafter will face Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, against whom he’s 3-0.

“I hope he remembers I keep beating him, and that it’s a mental thing,” Rafter said.
