ZURICH — Former FBI director Louis Freeh was set to assist FIFA’s Ethics Committee in examining bribery claims against the world soccer governing body’s suspended executives Mohamed Bin Hammam and Jack Warner, Inside World Football reported Saturday.
Former special agent Freeh, who led the FBI from 1993 to 2001, was set to interview the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) officials who were allegedly offered $40,000 bribes to back Bin Hammam in the recent presidential election.
Bin Hammam withdrew his name from the race last week, shortly before being suspended by the body. It left FIFA president Sepp Blatter to be reelected unopposed last Wednesday.
FIFA confirmed Freeh Group International (FGI) Europe was “mandated” to assist the investigation, which was expected to finish by the end of July.
