JET NOTES

Here’s something to look for when the Jets play the 49ers Sunday at Giants Stadium: Watch the first quarter closely.

The Jets, en route to their 4-0 start, have outscored their opponents 35-7 in the first 15 minutes, while the 49ers, en route to their 1-4 start, have been outscored 48-3 in the first quarter.

This is a statistic the Jets have quietly looked at closely and their strategy is to pounce on San Francisco early in an effort to take away any hope of a 49ers’ comeback like last week’s 31-28 win over Arizona.

This is the week the Jets, behind closed doors, have put huge emphasis on playing well in all three phases in one game for a change and putting away the opponent, something they’ve failed to do well enough all season.

As for the 49ers, getting off to a good start is more about survival.

“We have to work on starting off a little bit faster and getting some points on the board earlier in the game,” 49ers’ QB Tim Rattay said yesterday.

Herman Edwards yesterday delivered some bad news on three of his injured players, announcing that rookie CB Derrick Strait is out with a stress fracture in the fourth metatarsal on his foot.

“He’ll be out for a while,” Edwards said cryptically.

Also, starting LG Pete Kendall, who has been one of the unsung heroes to this early-season success, is out with a fracture on his right big toe. That injury had been previously described on Monday as a contusion. Edwards would not say how long Kendall could be out.

Edwards said that neither Kendall nor Strait would require surgery.

Meahwhile, RG Brandon Moore (hamstring) is listed as doubtful, which means that backups Brent Smith and Jonathan Goodwin will start at the guard positions.
