THE winds out of the north seemed to turn the fishing on, especially in the fluke department where we got solid reports from Ambrose Channel to Montauk Point.
The offshore reports were also positive with good action at the canyons for longfin and yellowfin tuna.
The full moon also turned the striped bass fishing up a notch, and you’ll find them along the beaches of the South Shore from Breezy Point to Montauk Light.
From Sheepshead Bay, we heard from the guys at Bernies Bait and Tackle, who share with us the good action on summer flatties at Shrewsbury Rocks, Ambrose Channel and the Rockaway Reef, where you can also pick up porgies and sea bass. In Jamaica Bay, you can load up on blue claw crabs around bridges and local piers.
A friend of mine who fished aboard the Flamingo III out of Knapp St. tells me he had great bluefish action this week.
Blues are also on the blitz in the western Sound and they’re hitting everything you throw at them, but bunker seems to work best. Don’t forget to sign up for the Greatest Bluefish Tourney that takes place Aug. 26-27 – and if you don’t know where, call (203) 366-BLUE to find out.
You can find fluke just outside Hempstead Harbor and into Oyster Bay. If you’re looking for scup, try Rye and Matinecock Point. A solid fluke bite is going on inside the Triangle.
Back along the South Shore, fluke have been active both inside and outside Jones Inlet. The party boats from Freeport are seeing a better keeper ratio of fluke.
