In last year’s Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park, Monarchos’ explosive run to daylight telegraphed his victory 10 weeks later in the Kentucky Derby.
Tomorrow’s Grade 1, $1M Florida Derby, at 11/8 miles, spotlights 11 3-year- old colts hoping to follow in Monarchos’ footsteps. Here are the prime candidates:
BOOKLET: From team that sent out Monarchos. Does nothing but win (6-for-7). Stretches out half-furlong after front-running, back-to-back scores over track in Holy Bull and Fountain of Youth.
HARLAN’S HOLIDAY: Never worse than second in eight starts, including four stakes (two for Ohio-breds) as 2-year-old.
NOKOMA: Working like wild horse (five furlongs in bullet :58.1 Monday) since winning allowance race Feb. 23.
HIGH STAR: Has back class, good closing kick and likes this track. Gary Stevens flies in to ride.
BLUE BURNER: Steinbrenner’s colt suffered first defeat in four starts closing for third in Fountain of Youth.
