His team may be stumbling a bit heading into the playoffs and many of his teammates may be slumping, but despite all the bumps and bruises, aches and pains, Edgardo Alfonzo is red hot.

His fifth-inning home run off Kevin Millwood helped spark the Mets to a 6-2, wild-card-clinching win in front of a crowd of 48,858 last night at Shea.

After Darryl Hamilton had stroked a two-out, RBI single to break a 1-1 tie, Alfonzo smashed Millwood’s next pitch into the bleachers in left. It was his 25th homer of the season, the seventh in the last 14 games. Not bad for a guy who’s fought his way through nagging injuries all year and caught fire at just the right time.

Alfonzo went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and two RBIs last night. In his last 18 games, he’s batting .379 (25-for-66) with seven homers, seven doubles, 13 RBIs. And he has scored 17 runs.

“This feels good,” said a champagne-soaked Alfonzo, dancing in the corner of the Mets clubhouse. “It doesn’t matter if you don’t win the division. We just have to be positive. If we have to [face the Braves] again, we’ll go again. Anything can happen if you’re positive. The [regular-season] numbers don’t matter. We’ll be starting all over again.

“I’ll tell you what: I don’t know what it is,” Alfonzo said of his hot hitting streak. “I just feel good. This is a good time to get hot, going into the playoffs. We just have to be positive, and feel we can go all the way.”
