Carlos Delgado had not had a major-league at-bat since May 10, 2009 in a Mets’ 8-4 win over the Pirates.

Delgado has been bothered by hip injuries since, but the one-time slugging first baseman has yet to give up on his career.

“I’d like to play but I’m not hitting, yet,” Delgado told the Toronto Sun from his home in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

“I just started running last week in San Juan. It’s tough to ask teams to come look at me. The first question they’ll ask is: ‘When can we see you hit?’ I don’t have an answer yet. Hopefully, it won’t be much longer.”

Delgado signed with the injury-riddled Red Sox last September, but while playing every other day for Boston’s Triple-A affiliate he experienced pain in the left hip and shut it down.

“I took a couple of days to think it over. Should I retire or have surgery?” Delgado said.

Delgado, 38, opted for surgery with Dr. Marc Philippon — the same surgeon that operated on Alex Rodriguez’s hip. He is anxious to hit again, but doesn’t want to make the same mistake he made last season.

“Ideally, I want to be ready sooner than later,” Delgado said. “But you don’t want to come back too quickly and get hurt again.”
