If there were a Final Four pickup game today, CBS lead analyst Billy Packer would pass on Syracuse super-frosh Carmelo Anthony with the first choice.
In fact, Packer would choose three other players before Anthony right now. On Packer’s pickup draft board, Kansas senior forward Nick Collison, Texas sophomore point T.J. Ford and Marquette’s junior guard Dwyane Wade are listed before Anthony.
In five years, Packer conceded, Anthony probably will be the best pro. But right now, Syracuse’s star is fourth out of four.
Any of the four, though, could be a national champion by Monday, leaving Packer looking at this weekend’s action in New Orleans with wide eyes and wonderment.
“You could make a case for any of these teams – without a huge upset – winning the national championship,” Packer said.
Packer doesn’t predict games he calls, but even if he did he would be unimaginably speechless.
“I could really see a scenario when any one of these four could be the champion on Monday night,” Packer said. “This should make it interesting.”
