MET NOTES

VIERA, Fla. – At some point during every spring training everywhere, reality slaps someone in the face. This year, in the Mets’ camp, it was John Frascatore’s turn.

The right-handed reliever was one of 11 players the Mets cut yesterday as they trimmed their camp roster to 33. He was reassigned to minor-league camp, but the 32-year-old Queens native won’t report.

“I don’t belong in the minor leagues, and I’ve proven that enough,” the 1988 Oceanside H.S. graduate said.

Frascatore has a career 4.00 ERA over parts of eight seasons with St. Louis, Arizona and Toronto. He allowed two earned runs in seven games spanning eight innings. He said he was assured when he signed that he’d make the club if he pitched well.

“When we sign a player, we can’t give anybody assurances,” general manager Steve Phillips said. “What we lay out for them is, ‘These are the players that are here. You compete against these guys.’ “

The other cuts: pitchers Mark Corey, Dicky Gonzalez and Mike Bacsik and catcher Jason Phillips were optioned to Norfolk. Reassigned to minor-league camp were Darren Bragg, Luis Figueroa, Joe Depastino, Jimmy Gonzalez, Hanley Frias and Jose Reyes.

The Mets are talking about getting bullpen help because of the likelihood John Franco will start the season on the disabled list. Major-league sources report they are talking with Texas and Oakland for righty Luis Vizcaino, who pitched parts of three seasons with the A’s. Vizcaino would come to the Mets in a three-way deal, although Phillips said, “Nobody’s made me a proposal. I don’t feel uncomfortable starting the year the way we are right now.”

Steve Trachsel threw 85 pitches in a five-inning start, allowing eight hits and five earned runs. Mark Guthrie, Kane Davis and Bobby Jones threw scoreless frames. Tyler Yates allowed two runs in one inning.
