FREE-FALL CONTINUES
GIANT REPORT CARD
QUARTERBACKS: D
Mental mistakes will happen for Eli Manning (6 for 21, 148 yards, 2 INTs), but his awful lob to Jeremy Shockey in end zone was bad, bad throw. Can’t get much worse than second half.
RUNNING BACKS: A
Despite lacerated knee and bruised shin, Tiki Barber (19-110) did his thing. It’s unfortunate his great season is being wasted.
WIDE RECEIVERS: C-
Rookie Jamaar Taylor (2-102) had catches of 52 and 50 yards and offers hope for the future. The present isn’t good for Amani Toomer (1-6) and Ike Hilliard, who was shut out.
TIGHT ENDS: C
Suggestion to Jeremy Shockey (2-31): Lose the mimicking Terrell Owens bird-flapping routine. You need a magnifying glass to find Visanthe Shiancoe’s disappearing role.
OFFENSIVE LINE: C-
Giants knew the Eagles would blitz and were overrun at the line of scrimmage (five sacks). Two false starts for RT David Diehl.
DEFENSIVE LINE: C+
Two more injury losses (Chuck Wiley for season, Norman Hand with strained groin) for this battered group. Osi Umenyiora is a bright spot amid the darkness.
LINEBACKERS: C+
Barrett Green (nine tackles) returned from injury and was ejected in fourth quarter for fighting Jeremiah Trotter on sideline. Real smart. Brian Westbrook (18-74) was often too elusive.
SECONDARY: B-
Frustration penalties on CBs Will Allen and Will Peterson, and Allen was beat on 50-yard bomb to Todd Pinkston. Good work by Curtis Deloatch and others on Terrell Owens (4-61, no celebrations).
SPECIAL TEAMS: C
Another special-teams gem by David Tyree on goal-line save of punt, but sloppy penalties on Shiancoe and Frank Walker. Good coverage, but again little in return game.
KICKING GAME: C
Jeff Feagles put three of his five punts down inside the 20-yard line but had a punt blocked when Marcellus Rivers failed to block Jevon Kearse. Steve Christie made two short (22, 31) field goals.
COACHING: D
There were fewer penalties but dumber ones, so is this progress or not? Preventing total collapse is huge challenge for Tom Coughlin.
