The Mets finally found a new right fielder, reaching a preliminary agreement with Karim Garcia on a one-year deal for $800,000 plus incentives.

The news is unlikely to appease Mets fans who are still smarting over losing Vladimir Guerrero, but there is no question that Garcia, the former Yankee, is a significant upgrade over the triumvirate of Roger Cedeno, Timo Perez and Raul Gonzalez. Playing last year with the Indians and Yankees, Garcia hit .262 with 11 homers and 35 RBIs, but in his 52 games with the Yankees alone, he hit .305 with a .342 on-base percentage.

Perhaps more telling is that with a full year’s at-bats, Garcia has shown the potential to put up some big numbers. Consider that in his last three years, he’s amassed a combined 149 games and 491 at-bats – essentially a full season. His combined numbers? A .281 average with 32 homers and 96 RBIs.

Garcia, 28, made headlines during the ALCS when he and Jeff Nelson were involved in a fracas with Fenway Park groundskeeper Paul Williams. All three pleaded not guilty to assault and battery charges after the Game 3 altercation. Garcia’s agent, Bobby Barad, would not comment on his player’s legal status, but stressed that it would not affect Garcia’s baseball preparation.

“At this point, nobody thinks this will impact him in any way as far as his commitment on the field,” Barad said. “He will not be distracted by that.”

The Mets also procured some bench help, returning veteran infielder Todd Zeile to Shea. Terms of that deal were undisclosed.
