FORT MYERS – Gary Sheffield awoke yesterday morning with a swollen right thumb and was taken for X-rays in Tampa.

Joe Torre had not heard the results following the Yankees’ 11-7 victory over Boston.

Sheffield jammed the thumb when he slipped and fell in the outfield Saturday at Legends Field. The Yankee right fielder insisted he was fine all along, but the training staff didn’t want to take any chances.

“It was a little puffy,” Torre said. “I guess he’s not really concerned about it.”

Sheffield downplayed the injury the last time he spoke with reporters, which was Saturday afternoon.

“Again, it’s not something we’re holding our breath about,” Torre said.
