Alex Rodriguez came clean with his version of the truth yesterday, but he is not getting a free pass from most people. George Brett, Rangers owner Tom Hicks and Astros slugger Lance Berkman all ripped into A-Rod yesterday.
Here’s a look at what they had to say:
Brett told the Sporting News, “I was shocked. I saw on Katie Couric (on an interview on CBS) that he swore he never did it … I’m just shocked, totally shocked. I thought he was our last savior. It’s definitely going to tarnish (his legacy). He can say he’s done it from 2001-2003, but he’s already lied once, so who’s going to believe him?”
That George Brett has some nerve. I think we all remember Brett as a cheater, too. That pine tar incident alone should have kept him out of the Hall of Fame. Who knows what else he was up to?
(There were some confused some readers who thought I was serious about comparing the pine tar incident to steroids, so for the record, that was a joke).
Hicks, who signed Rodriguez to that record contract in 2001, was angered by the report and admission: “This whole episode caught me totally by surprise. I feel personally betrayed and deceived by Alex. As I said before, I’m shocked.”
Berkman told the Houston Chronicle, “Nobody’s going to be believed anymore. I can sit here and crow and say I’ve never done steroids or never done anything illegal from a standpoint of performance-enhancing drugs, but who’s going to believe me? The point’s well made, because we’re all guilty by association. One side of me is glad that these guys are getting outed.”
