George Washington continued to make its case as a city championship favorite over the weekend, winning the Northeast Elite Clarkston South Tournament for the first time. The Trojans, ranked second in New York City by The Post and undefeated in Manhattan A East, bested Catholic powers Bishop Ford and Fordham Prep in preliminary rounds and topped defending PSAL champion Tottenville, 9-2, in the championship game.
Kevin Torres went the distance in the final while fellow starters Jariel Cedeno and Yael Regalado also picked up wins over the weekend. Fernelys Sanchez homered against Tottenville, while third baseman Jorge Toribio and shortstop Randy Rodriguez enjoyed productive weekends.
“We got great pitching all weekend and it’s nice to come home with a championship,” interim coach Nick Carbone said. “Any time you go up there and get to play against good competition it’s a good experience. We’ve never won it before, so that was nice. It’s a playoff-type atmosphere. Its pressure packed because you’re playing for something.”
The Trojans (9-0, Manhattan A East) continued to roll this weekend with a pair of league wins over West 50th Street Campus and FDA. On Tuesday against FDA, Yael Regalado went 5 1/3 for the win and Erick Roman homered and drove in two runs.
That George Washington beat Tottenville was particularly satisfying since the defending city champions eliminated the Trojans in last year’s semifinals.
“They took it to us pretty good last year and it was nice to get another crack at them,” Carbone said. “They have a great program and the fact of the matter is they’re the champions until someone knocks them off. They still have that ring on their finger.”
He later said: “If you want to be the best, you got to beat the best.”
With wins over Tottenville, Beacon, Bishop Ford and Fordham Prep in the last week, George Washington has certainly done that.
