Just last week, Giants cornerback Bashir Levingston complained about the difficulty in playing and living in Amsterdam, an assignment he accepted in order to have a better chance of sticking on the Giants’ roster. What happened this week surely will brighten Levingston’s outlook.
The small but speedy defensive back was named the NFL Europe Defensive Player of the Week after his 45-yard interception return for a touchdown helped the Amsterdam Admirals to a 23-20 overtime victory over the Rhein Fire. Levingston also added four tackles. The Giants consider him an exciting and intriguing prospect as a kickoff and punt returner, but they aren’t sure he can make the team as a fourth cornerback.
The two other players allocated to Amsterdam by the Giants also had solid games against Rhein. Defensive end Frank Ferrara had a sack and linebacker O.J. Childress had four tackles and one interception.
The Giants yesterday signed three more free agents: FB Brian Atkins, T Jim Goff and DT Carl Hansen. Atkins is a 6-1, 253-pounder from Oklahoma State, while Goff (6-4, 295) played at Lafayette and is a native of Hawthorne, N.J. Hansen (6-5, 282) played at Stanford and was a 1998 sixth-round draft pick of the Seahawks. Hansen played in five games last season for the Jets, recording one tackle.
