Leon Goldstein is trying to finish fast after a slow start.
The defending PSAL Brooklyn A-II division champion lost its first two games, including a seven-goal defeat to New Utrecht. Since then Goldstein had won four of its last five games and got a taste of redemption against the visiting Utes with a 6-4 win Thursday.
“We used [last game] against them to hype up the team and let’s just answer back and try to win this game,” Goldstein coach Joanna Soares said. “They are well-coached and deserve to be in the ‘A’ division.”
The Dolphins (4-2-1) led 3-0 at the half only to see New Utrecht tie the score at 4 with 12 minutes left in the game. Then Goldstein star Pamela Wishart went to work, scoring two of her five goals to ensure the win.
Pamela Chernyakhovsky added a goal and Sasha Hernandez made 15 saves. The movement of Genesis Cuadros to midfield and Julie Campos to forward allowed Goldstein to keep the ball in the New Utrecht (3-3-1) third.
“Wishart is just so skilled,” Soares said. “She can dribble through five defenders. She is just that good.”
Midwood 7, FDR 1: Serene Drakes tallied three goals and two assists and Daneth Tapia Rodelo had three goals and an assist for Midwood (4-2-1) in Brooklyn A-III. Alina Barylnikova added a goal and Roxana Bravo and Arlshals Troncoso each added an assist. FDR is 0-7-0.
Fort Hamilton 4, Lincoln 1: Maria Pettet scored twice and dished out two assists Fort Hamilton (6-0-1) in Brooklyn A-II. Cansu Usta and Teresita Gonzalez each had a goal and an assist. Irene Kafkis made 10 saves. Lincoln is 2-5-0.
Beacon 5, Lab Museum 0: Jennifer Angione recorded a hat trick for Beacon (9-0-0) in a Manhattan A-II/VIII crossover. Jane Huber and Tyler Sloan each added goals and Alex Easton and Isabela Newsom both added assists. Lab Museum is 2-5-0.
