McKee/Staten Island Tech slipped past Tottenville, 28-26, 25-19, to move back up to second place Monday in PSAL Staten Island A9 girls volleyball.
The Sea Gulls were pushed to the brink in the first set by a Pirates squad that has experienced a renaissance after winning just three matches last year. Both MSIT (8-2) and Tottenville (7-3) have clinched playoff spots and, with first-place Susan Wagner, have made Staten Island one of the best divisions in the PSAL.
MSIT was a finalist in the Tottenville tournament last month and Tottenville stole a set from perennial New York City power Hunter College HS at Cardozo two weeks ago. Wagner, meanwhile, won tournaments at Tottenville and Aviator and finished third in a tough field at the Francis Lewis match play tournament. Fourth-place New Dorp, which is still trying to earn a postseason berth, was a finalist at the Seward Park tournament.
Francis Lewis 2, Bayside 0: Alicja Pawelec had eight kills and two blocks for Lewis (8-0) in a 25-6, 25-13 win in Queens A6. Chereese Sheen had five kills, Jillian Escobar had nine aces and Gyna Anthony had six digs for the Patriots. Dominika Mrozowska had seven assists and Ellie Alexandrou had six assists. Jessica Choi had six digs for Bayside (2-5).
Bronx Science 2, Clinton 0: Eugenie Dubin had six kills and Juliana Kwan had six assists and seven aces for Science (8-2) in a 25-15, 25-11 win in Bronx A1. Elisabeth Razoumov had six aces and Rachel Ng had five assists for the Wolverines. Clinton is 0-10.
Murry Bergtraum 2, Lab Museum 1: Janelle Linton had seven kills and Ashley Cerda had five aces to lead Bergtraum (3-7) to a 25-21, 9-25, 25-17 win in Manhattan A4. Lab Museum is 6-4.
Bayard Rustin 2, Art & Design 0: Arelis Espinal had seven kills, Medina Lukolic had seven assists and Kimberly Mercado had six aces for Rustin (5-4) in Manhattan A5. Art & Design is 0-8.
PSAL CLASS B
Telecom 2, Fort Hamilton 0: Alexis Cruz had five kills and Eugenia Tang had 10 aces to lead Telecom (3-6) to a 26-24, 25-17 win in Brooklyn B6. Fort Hamilton is 5-5.
Goldstein 2, Lafayette 0: Kristen Herchenroder had eight aces and Chrissy McKeever had seven assists to lead Goldstein (10-0) to a 25-9, 25-6 win in Brooklyn B6. Lafayette is 0-10.
