Recently, a few players have approached John F. Kennedy coach Iris Bromfield confused about her constant lineup changes. The Knights are young this season and Bromfield is experimenting with multiple rotations.
On Monday, the coach sat star middle hitter Sharon Ofori to give Kiara Rosario and Michelle Esteva a chance in a 25-12, 25-16 win against Walton at Columbus HS in PSAL Bronx A1 girls volleyball.
When will things be finalized?
“By next week before we play Columbus,” Bromfield said. “I also gotta get ready for [Bronx] Science.”
Kennedy (7-0) has a tricky few weeks ahead. In league play, the Knights still have to play Science twice and Columbus, in second place after beating Science on Monday, once. On Saturday, JFK will compete in the loaded Francis Lewis tournament and Bromfield will also host a pair of tournaments before the playoffs in November.
“Hopefully, they’ll play at a top level,” the coach said. “They seem to play better when teams are at a top level.”
Ashley Herrera, almost fully recovered from a dislocated shoulder, had six kills and Mel-Lisa Saunders had five kills, four blocks, seven digs and four aces against Walton (3-4). Jessica Gonzalez had 10 assists and four aces, Paola Piroli had seven assists and six digs and Doruntina Zariqi had seven digs and six aces. Rosario and Esteva each had two blocks and Suada Ibric added six digs for the Knights.
“The goals haven’t changed,” Bromfield said. “The team is playing more sure of themselves.”
Francis Lewis 2, RFK 0: Gyna Anthony had six kills, Jillian Escobar had nine digs and Nathalie Cabrera ha seven aces for Lewis (5-0) in a 25-6, 25-6 win in Queens A6. Ellie Alexandrou had eight assists, Dominika Mrozowska had seven assists and Lisa Camargo had two blocks. RFK is 0-5.
Boys & Girls 2, Van Arsdale 1: Joan Powell had six kills, eight assists and seven aces and Tianna McNichol had five kills to lead Boys (5-1) to a 25-12, 22-25, 25-17 win in Brooklyn A2. Elicia Howard added seven aces. Van Arsdale is 1-5.
PSAL CLASS B
School of the Future 2, Pace 0: Esther Dionisio and Samantha Rios each had five aces to lead School of the Future (5-1) in a 25-17, 25-22 win in Manhattan B7. Pace is 2-4.
CHSAA
Bishop Kearney 3, Bishop Loughlin 0: Christina Shalhoub had 13 kills and seven aces to lead Kearney (9-1) in a 25-16, 25-14, 25-5 win in CHSAA Brooklyn. Meaghan McGoorty had five kills and five aces, Bridget Kinane had 22 assists and four aces and Deirdre Smith had four kills.
Fontbonne Hall 3, Bishop Loughlin 0: Sarah McCarthy had eight assists, nine aces and three kills to lead Fontbonne to a 25-9, 25-7, 25-17 win in CHSAA Brooklyn. Katie Lang had six assists and four aces and Kara Egan had five aces and four kills.
St. Catharine Academy 3, Maria Regina 0: Alessandra Rosso had 14 kills, Amarilda Shkoza had seven kills, Lauren Paylor had 22 assists and Grace Kingsley added three blocks for SCA (11-0) in a 25-17, 25-16, 25-15 win in CHSAA Bronx/Westchester.
