Susan Wagner coach Marco Altieri picked up his 100th victory Wednesday as the Falcons swept Petrides in PSAL Staten Island A9 girls volleyball. The 10th-year coach has guided Wagner to three straight semifinals berths, including a trip to the final last year – the first appearance in the championship match for a Staten Island team in three decades.
“Yeah, it’s a milestone for me as a coach, but really it’s a milestone for the program,” Altieri said.
Wagner (5-0) has now won 41 straight Staten Island league matches. Making Altieri’s feat even more impressive was that he started out 15-31 before things began turning around in 2006. Since then, the Falcons are 85-24 and have become one of the PSAL’s premier programs.
“I remember looking at Tech and looking at Curtis and Tottenville,” the coach said. “I’ll be honest, I was so caught up in one day winning the division. That’s all I wanted to do. Having those good playoff runs make you want so much more.”
Wagner fell to Cardozo in last year’s final, letting a 24-21 lead in the decisive third set slip away. The Falcons have come a long way since his first few years on the bench. Altieri has been a catalyst for club volleyball on Staten Island and the sport has grown in popularity, especially at Susan Wagner.
“Ultimately we want to win a championship,” he said. “That’s our goal. We came so close last year. Only one point.”
