New York native Mike Grella, a once-promising attacker who spent six years playing professionally in England, is on trial with the Red Bulls.

The 26-year-old Glen Cove native initially rejected MLS and inked with Leeds United, going on to play for Carlisle, Swindon Town, Brentford, and Bury. He spent last season playing with Scunthorpe United in League One, but scored just one goal in league play. He saw his team relegated and his contract terminated.

Grella had trained briefly with the New York Cosmos in 2011, but had stated his desire to stay in Europe at the time. Now he’s trialing with the Red Bulls, a move first reported by @GothamistDan. Grella has largely been used as a forward, but does not have a great strike rate. He’s creative on the ball and he might be able to contribute in the midfield if signed.

On a quasi-related note, I can never hear about Scunthorpe United and not immediately think back to this Ali G classic, with he and David Beckham and Posh verbally jousting about Scunthorpe. It’s comedic genius.
