GUTTY NORMAN SURVIVES
What a reward for the U.S. Open’s day-session fans who stuck around through multiple rain delays in the afternoon. Those tennis diehard were treated to the match of the tournament last night in the intimate setting of the Grandstand, connected to the old stadium.
Only day-session ticketholders were allowed admittance to the four-hour, six-minute third-round men’s war between No. 3 seed Magnus Norman and Max Mirnyi. Although they didn’t see an upset, they saw plenty of drama as Norman rallied from two sets down and survived four match points to win in a fifth-set tiebreaker 11-9, in the tournament’s longest match, which ended at 10:04 p.m.
