Fuzzy Levane (
)

Sounding on the phone like he’s 45 “and looking pretty good, too, for a man of my age,” if he does say so himself, former Knicks (and Hawks) coach Fuzzy Levane celebrated his 91st birthday yesterday talking about how much fun his old team is to watch these days, the Mets and the second Joe Louis-Max Schmeling fight June 19, 1936.

“I was 14 at the time,” Fuzzy said from his South Carolina home outside Columbia. “Me and my cousin were selling peanuts at Yankee Stadium when we spotted two unoccupied ringside seats just as the rematch was about to begin so we took off our hats and quickly sat down.

“I can still see Louis’ punch to Schmeling’s solar plexus and hear his cry of pain. A few more powerful punches and it was over [two minutes and four seconds]. The people whose seats we took were late and never saw a thing.”
