HERM’S OFFENSE AILING
JETS NOTES
The Jets are facing the very real possibility of being without three offensive starters when they face the 49ers Sunday at Giants Stadium.
Guards Pete Kendall (fractured right toe) and Brandon Moore (pulled left hamstring) have already been declared “out” for the game. Receiver Santana Moss, who’s listed as “questionable” with a hamstring pull, didn’t practice yesterday and is very “iffy,” according to Herman Edwards.
Should Moss, who sat out much of the second half last week with the injury, originally described as cramps, not be able to play that’ll mean more action for Wayne Chrebet, who’s coming off his best performance in two years. It’ll also mean WR Justin McCareins will return punts.
As for Kendall, he said yesterday that he hopes and plans to be back in the lineup next week in New England.
“The longer I go without playing there is less a chance of displacing the fracture,” Kendall said. “We were concerned that if I played this week I would displace the fracture and that would lead to being out four to six weeks.”
Kendall, who injured the foot in the first quarter last week, isn’t sure whether it happened when teammate Kevin Mawae stepped on it or huge Bills’ DT Pat Williams stepped on it.
“My intention is to be back next week, although I don’t have a ‘doctor’ in front of my name,” he said. “There are some protective devices they can put on it.”

Edwards said he’d told backup RB LaMont Jordan “to be ready” in case he’s called upon for more running action this week despite the fact that Jordan has rushed only once for two yards this season.
Edwards, however, didn’t want to be held to running Jordan any specific amount of times.
“Shouldn’t be a LaMont watch,” Edwards said. “LaMont will get in when we decide to put him in. When he gets in, he’ll run the ball. If not, then he should block somebody. If not, he should catch the pass. It’s not about LaMont Jordan, it’s about the football team. It’s not about any player. The players know that.”
