‘HOMECOMING’ FOR MARV
After being exiled from the Garden following a dispute with Cablevision boss Jim Dolan, Marv Albert tonight returns for the first time since he quit – or was fired, depending on whom you believe – as voice of the Knicks.
Albert will be at the mike for TNT on the Knicks-Sixers game.
“I won’t say what the players say, ‘It is just another game,’ ” said Albert, who called Knick games for 35 years. “I won’t say that. Unfortunately, it is not going to be like the crowd is electrifying. It is Knicks-Philly. Philly has a shot at the playoffs. For the Knicks, it has been a very poor season. It is not like if the Knicks were battling or were at a high level and the crowd would be what we have seen it. It is not really going to be that.”
That type of candor from Albert irked Dolan. Censorship and money were at the heart of the disagreement.
Next season, Albert will be the main voice of the Nets on YES. He declined to discuss that assignment, in which he will replace longtime Net-caster Ian Eagle.
At the Garden, Albert realizes that, given the nature of his divorce from Dolan’s Cablevision, sentimentality won’t rule the evening. Still, Albert won’t let it damper his outlook.
“I’m looking forward to it, because I have had so many great memories doing games at the Garden,” said Albert. “It was always a great place to work. It is still a terrific arena. The team is obviously not doing well.”
Earlier in the year, Albert called the Knicks’ road win over the Rockets on TNT. Coincidentally enough, the November victory might have been the apex of the Knicks’ season.
“It was probably their biggest win,” Albert said.
