SARATOGA SPRINGS – For eighth straight year since they created bonus for OTB Big Apple Triple for state-bred 3-year-olds, consisting of Mike Lee at seven furlongs at Belmont, NY Derby at mile-and-sixteenth at Finger Lakes, and Albany at mile-and-eighth at Old Spa, horse failed to sweep all three races.

After winning first two legs, Ferocious Won was 5-2 under Edgar Prado to collect $250,000 bonus, but after making run around far turn, flattened out to finish sixth of seven. Indian Hawke, trained by George Weaver, off at nearly 20-1 after losing to Ferocious Won by 17 lengths in NY Derby, led gate to wire under Jose Santos, who also won nightcap to double his number of winners at meet.

FOURTH RACE: Yet another in series of goofy races by 2-year-old maidens at this meet, this one at 5 ½ furlongs on turf. Quality Affair, 4-1 first-time Lasix for Allen Jerkens breaking from far outside post 10, broke on top under Julien Leparoux, then Infield Lake came through on rail, and those two dueled down backside. But Quality Affair, after angling in early, began to drift out, and out, and out. Although he opened up daylight turning for home, by time Quality Affair straightened into stretch he’d practically bolted to outer rail, losing all chance.
