CLEVELAND — Former Yankees All-Star first baseman and current Dodgers hitting coach Don Mattingly confirmed he spoke with the Indians last week about their managerial opening and will talk to them again this week. Mattingly, who has no managing experience, said he also has been approached by the Nationals about their opening.

“I’ve wanted to manage for a long time,” Mattingly said as the Dodgers, trailing 3-1 in the NLCS to Philadelphia, prepared for Game 4 yesterday. “When the opportunity knocks, you kick the door down. I’m flattered there are organizations that are interested. I’ve been through what it takes to get from one place to another.”

Indians general manager Mark Shapiro did not disclose Mattingly as one of his candidates, though he said the team is considering two finalists in addition to former Nationals manager and Mets coach Manny Acta, who led off the second round of interviews yesterday to replace Eric Wedge.

The Indians also plan to meet with former Mets manager Bobby Valentine, who is working as an ESPN analyst after a successful stint as a manager in Japan.
