Call it Mission Impossible.

Knick president Isiah Thomas bolted from their summer-league training camp after yesterday’s morning practice and flew to L.A. to meet with Kobe Bryant to convince him the only challenge he has left in his career is playing in New York.

Thomas left for Southern California two days ahead of the Knicks’ summer-league team, which will fly tomorrow to Long Beach to begin play. Thomas, according to a league source, was going to get together with Bryant and agent Rob Pelinka last night or today.

While out West, Thomas said he will meet with Chicago free-agent guard Jamal Crawford, who lives in Seattle.

Bryant has also met with the Nuggets out near his Newport Beach home. The Lakers are the favorites to keep Bryant, with the Clippers, Spurs and Denver also in the mix. Thomas would have to convince Bryant to force L.A. into a sign-and-trade or threaten to leave for the under-the-cap Clippers or Nuggets in which the Lakers would receive no compensation.

Meanwhile, Thomas said his talks with the Bulls have not progressed, saying Chicago is talking to other teams, too, about a sign-and-trade.

The Bulls have had conversations with Miami, Minnesota and Sacramento. With the wild contracts being agreed upon for unproven players such as Marquis Daniels, the Bulls are now prepared to match a maximum mid-level offer.

As reported, Thomas and Chicago GM John Paxson exchanged offers Tuesday, but they were vague proposals. The Knicks have not told the Bulls what amount they would give to sign Crawford, who’s looking for $7M-plus. Tuesday’s talks were more an exchange of names.

“I don’t know any more today than what I knew yesterday,” Thomas said. “I’m sure we’re not the only team they’re talking to. They’ve made it so public. That means they probably have some other team they’re holding over the barrel.”
