And on the ice … the Islanders last night thoroughly trashed the Penguins, 5-1, in one of their best showings of the season.

Before 11,229 intense Coliseum fans, including the protesters, the Isles scored a season-high two short-handed goals en route to their second straight victory.

Mathieu Biron, Mariusz Czerkawski, Jorgen Jonsson, Jamie Heward and Claude Lapointe scored for the Isles, who improved to 15-34-6-1. Kevin Weekes made 33 saves.

Eric Cairns and Matthew Barnaby provided fireworks on and off the ice. After fighting each other near the end of the second period, the two went at each other again in the hallway between the locker rooms. Cairns managed to deck Barnaby before security broke them up.
