Flyers 4

Islanders 3

Garth Snow started for the second straight game last night against the Flyers, the first time this season he’s gotten back-to-back starts.

Islanders coach Steve Stirling said Snow was back between the pipes because he played so well against the Flyers over the weekend. Also because the coach didn’t think Rick DiPietro hasn’t been very sharp in his last few starts.

DiPietro last started on Friday and allowed six goals on 45 shots to Ottawa, the majority of which were because of bad bounces or breakdowns by the Isles’ defense. One goal bounced in off his catching glove, but after that 6-2 loss, Stirling said he didn’t fault DiPietro for many of the goals. But yesterday morning, Stirling admitted he wanted DiPietro to take a “step back” this week and continue working with goalie guru Sudarshan Maharaj.

After last night, the Isles will be off until Sunday’s game at Detroit, which would be at least a week after DiPietro’s last start and plenty of time for him to regroup, according to the coach.

“It’s a combination of two,” Stirling said. “Snow played really well and, for the most part over his career, played well against Philly. And it gives Ricky another day to take a step back, work with Sudsie … we have a stretch of time here when we can get some practice time.

“We haven’t had a lot of practice time in the last week or so,” Stirling said. “When you aren’t as mentally or physically sharp as you’d like to be – he hasn’t been way off, that’s not what I’m saying – but I think he and Sudsie and I would like him to be a little sharper mentally and/or physically.

“This is a perfect time to take a step back, get four or five practices, clean up, tweak a few areas and then he’s good to go.”

Going into last night’s start, Snow was 5-4-1 as an Islander against the Flyers and was coming off an impressive 34-save performance at Philadelphia last Saturday. Snow had won his three previous starts going into last night and was 5-2-1 on the year.

DiPietro had lost three of his last four decisions and carries a 3.31 GAA and .897 save percentage in 20 games.

Wyatt Smith and Sean Bergenheim were recalled from Bridgeport to give the Islanders 12 forwards while Oleg Kvasha remains day-to-day with a right ankle sprain … Flyers center Peter Forsberg (groin) was not expected to play last night for the second straight game.
