American John Isner won three tiebreakers to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the U.S. Open.

The 28th-seeded Isner beat France’s Gilles Simon 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) in three hours, 39 minutes Thursday in a match delayed two days by rain. Isner will face fourth-ranked Andy Murray.

The 12th-seeded Simon had a chance to serve out the first set and had set points in the fourth, but the big-serving Isner is tough to beat once he gets into tiebreakers, coming in with a 30-19 record this year.

The 26-year-old Isner is most famous for his marathon Wimbledon match last year but now has a chance to be known as a major semifinalist. With Andy Roddick also winning, there are two American men in the U.S. Open quarters for the first time since 2008.
